Tourism in Nîmes: a season at its best!

Summer is already far away, let’s take a look at the summer tourist numbers unveiled by the municipality last September, which show a 10% increase compared to 2018!

The Nîmes summer was full of events this year! Begun at the beginning of May with the Great Roman Games, the tourist season continued until September to end in style with the Féria des Vendanges. On the program, the Museum of Romanity and its superb exhibition on Pompeii, the unconditional Nîmes Festival (where Elton John was seen), the Grande Boucle du Tour de France, the Pentecostal fair, etc. Something new also took place with the Nemaus Nights, which welcomed a total of more than 30,000 people to the Arena over four nights, with the bonus of magnificent fireworks fired from the track. In all, it was some 2 million visitors who discovered “French Rome”… A nice score despite the heat waves!

Foreign tourists accounted for 27% of visitors in the summer of 2019: first German, then Spanish, then English and then Belgian. Some Russian tourists have even been seen thanks to the opening of the Moscow-Montpellier line. But French tourists are not to be outdone! The Thursdays of Nîmes thus welcomed many Nîmes people ready to (re)discover the “Costières de Nîmes” wines, and the Heritage Days were well received by many people from the Gard.

1.136 million people participated in the Pentecost fair
630,000 people participated in the Grape Harvest Fair
405,000 visitors discovered the main sites in Nîmes (the Arena, the Maison Carrée, the Tour Magne)
260,000 spectators attended the Tour de France from Nîmes
15930 visitors discovered the city by small train.
